EXFOLIATION RITUAL

For many centuries, full-body exfoliation has been a part of beauty rituals from many cultures all over the world. In the North African and Middle Eastern tradition, this custom is practised in a specific place called a hammam, literally meaning “source of hot water” in Arabic.
It is a place meant for relaxation and care, made up of several rooms heated at different temperatures. The hammam ritual begins with the initial ‘perspiration’ step, in a hot, humid room with the aim of sweating to allow the body to eliminate toxins and for the skin pores to dilate. Then, comes the glove-assisted exfoliation, often preceded by the application of black soap, which removes dead cells and gives the skin an in-depth cleansing. Finally, the last step is to rinse with cold water to get the blood flow going again and tone the skin. It is recommended to enrich the experience by applying creams, oils, or serums to deeply nourish and hydrate the skin.

Beyond a simple care ritual, in Morocco, the Hammam is a special place where all social groups gather and socialize. It is a public place for sharing, encounters, bodily and spiritual purification, which has its rightful place at the heart of the local life. The men and women from the neighbourhood meet there in separate rooms, naked, in total acceptance of their bodies and physical differences: it is a time for massages, gossip, and scrubs.

It has been proven that this ancient custom, now practised more and more often in our western cultures, contributes to the health and beauty of the body, all while giving a sensation of well-being and relaxation. Heat detoxifies the body and perfectly prepares the skin to receive the cleansing and exfoliating treatments that follow. A true detox moment, exfoliation promotes healthy skin and prevents premature aging.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXFOLIATION

There are two kinds of exfoliation: mechanical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation.

In both cases, the goal is to stimulate the elimination of dead cells and promote cell renewal to improve the quality and texture of the skin. As it can be difficult to make the right choice, here is a brief explanation.

Chemical or Enzymatic Exfoliation

These are cosmetic products that contain specific ingredients that eliminate dead cells on the surface of the skin thanks to a chemical action. The most popular on the market are alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), glycolic acids, salicylic or even lactic acids, which come from fruits like apples or lemons. Once applied to the skin, the enzymes eliminate dead cells on the surface, and in doing so, stimulate cell renewal. Depending on your skin type and desired results, this kind of exfoliation can be done at home or at an institute.

Mechanical Exfoliation

This is the most ancient and most natural type of exfoliation. It is also the most well-known and most practised method of exfoliation.
It can be done with granule-based cosmetic products such as scrubs, or with exfoliation accessories such as the Renaissance Glove, professional micro-dermabrasion devices, or even exfoliating brushes. This technique removes dead cells from the surface of the epidermis by scrubbing or rubbing movements.

OUR PRO TIPS

To maximize your exfoliation ritual and obtain the desired results, please follow the following steps:

1) ROUTINE FOR WEEKLY DEEP EXFOLIATION

  1. Wet your skin with lukewarm or warm water for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Wet your glove for 30 seconds before wringing it well.
  3. Get out of the water and remove the excess water from your body so that your skin is humid.
  4. For the body: Scrub vigorously, from bottom to top on the limbs and back (going up towards the heart); and in a circular motion on the torso, the knees, the buttocks, and the shoulders. After a few times, you’ll notice dead skin residue coming off and rolling on your Renaissance Glove.
For the face: With the exfoliating side of your Renaissance accessory, massage the skin, focusing more on your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), your neck, and your hairline.
  5. Rinse your glove well and wring the water out of it.
  6. Hang it above your shower with the hook.

2) ROUTINE FOR DAILY HYGIENE

  1. In the shower, apply your shower gel* on the Renaissance Glove, and get a lather going on the glove while giving yourself a massage.
  2. Rinse the glove and wring the water out of it.
  3. Hang it above your shower with the hook.

*We do not advise the use of a soap bar, because of the risk of leaving residue on the glove. Ideally, choose gel textures such as shower gels.

AND THEN?

The plant-based material of the glove allows quick drying.

Whichever routine you carry (daily or weekly exfoliation), we always advise hydrating properly after each session to protect and nourish the skin.

By combining the two types of exfoliation and with frequent use of the Renaissance Glove, you will obtain radiant and healthy skin at all times!
